Chapter Six

“Mr. Malignant single-handedly undermined the economic stability of the United States and was wanted on over three hundred charges, a true criminal mastermind. When I found him, he resisted arrest. I regret his death but the world is a better place without him.”

—Glimmer

The sedan slid into a parking stall beside Dan’s gray pickup truck. If Glimmer was here, he’d have flown. Burke cut the engine and the three of them sat in the silent car. Gina was a dark silhouette in the backseat. He couldn’t see her expression.

“Well, let’s get this over with,” Static said. He held his hands together and his face was illuminated by harsh blue light as electricity arced between his fingertips. He grinned, his teeth eerie white, and opened his car door.

Burke glanced again at Gina. She was so tiny compared to him. Taller than Static, but slender and soft. Normal. “She should stay here,” he told his boss as he climbed out of the car.

“Nonsense! She’s a good hostage.” Static jumped a few times, then put his hand over his head and stretched.

“We don’t take hostages, remember?” Burke said.

Static shrugged. “We can make Glimmer think she’s a hostage, then take him by surprise.”

Burke cracked his knuckles. “I don’t like this.”

“I already said I was coming,” Gina said as she climbed out of the car and stood next to Static. “I’ll follow you in if you try to leave me here.”

“She’s coming, Burke.” Static pulled a black mask split with a white lightning bolt from his pocket. He pulled it over his head and spent a moment fussing with the leather until it sat over his face like a second skin. “Mask up.”

Anger coursed through him, hot enough to pull his hands into fists and contemplate smashing the smug half smile from his boss’s face. Or he could lock Gina in the trunk. For her own good, of course. She’d be safe from Glimmer, but she’d be furious. Nobody ever listened when he had something logical to say.

After a moment he reluctantly let go of his anger and forced his fists to unclench. He couldn’t make everyone’s decisions for them. And it was his own damn fault he liked women with guts.

Taking a black luchador mask from his pocket, he pulled it over his head and adjusted it so the eyeholes wouldn’t slip. The smooth black leather would help protect the skin on his face when fists started to fly.

When he looked back at Gina, the scared little freckles had reappeared across her nose. Guilt resurfaced, and he wished he could pick her up and take her away from here. Her fear was his fault. Her fear was why henchmen didn’t date normal people. Ever. Collateral damage could be worse than a broken heart.

Static grinned, looking feral. “Let’s go.” He strode off toward the front entrance.

Burke stopped when he noticed Gina hadn’t moved. “It’s not too late for you to stay in the car.”

“I’m coming.” She raised her chin and started after Static, her heels beating a confidant beat on the pavement.
